The Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) will host a new exhibition titled ‘Extraordinary Wedding Attire: Variations of the Skirt and Jacket’ from 17 June to 30 November 2026 at its Fashion Archive. Exhibition Content and Features
The exhibition is organised by HKDI and supported by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Funding Scheme. It invites several masters of the skirt and jacket to personally teach students from various institutions the embroidery and tailoring techniques of traditional skirts and jackets. The exhibition will showcase outstanding designs by students and enhance public awareness of this intangible cultural heritage.
Divided into six exhibition areas, the event comprehensively presents the historical evolution and contemporary interpretations of the skirt and jacket. Visitors can experience the culture and aesthetics of Chinese skirt and jacket craftsmanship through a multi-sensory immersive experience, traversing the history and contemporary innovations of these garments.
Exhibition Highlights
The exhibition gathers traditional skirts and jackets from the HKDI Fashion Archive, including the ‘Kua Huang’, ‘Kua Hau’, and the Five Blessings skirt and jacket, showcasing embroidered pieces rich in auspicious meanings. It details the historical context of how skirts and jackets evolved from official attire to wedding garments. Additionally, the exhibition will feature new skirt and jacket designs by renowned fashion designer alumni, blending traditional auspicious embroidery patterns with contemporary aesthetics.
To fully engage the audience in Hong Kong’s traditional wedding culture, the exhibition includes wedding displays and an AI interactive photo zone, where visitors can try on various wedding accessories and take photos in ‘New Chinese Style Skirt and Jacket’ outfits against an LED magazine-style backdrop.
Extended Exhibition and Community Participation
To deepen public understanding of cultural heritage, some exhibits will be displayed at the Tseung Kwan O Public Library from 11 to 24 June 2026, bringing this exquisite traditional craft out of the campus and into the community.
Dr. Lam Yi-Ni, Principal of HKDI, expressed hope that the exhibition will allow students to not only experience the craftsmanship of Chinese skirts and jackets but also inject new life into traditional culture using modern tools like AI, ensuring that the craftsmanship continues to shine through generations.
