The key to small units is not about “saving space”, but rather avoiding visual interruptions. With the same area, using lower furniture, exposing more floor space, and distributing light sources can significantly enhance the sense of space. The following four principles can be applied without any renovations.
1. Use Lower Furniture and Raised Legs
Tall cabinets can cut off wall space, making the ceiling appear lower. Opt for lower cabinets placed against one wall, leaving the rest of the walls clear. Sofas and bed frames with legs allow more visible floor space, creating a wider visual effect compared to solid base pieces.
2. Avoid Relying on a Single Ceiling Light
A single ceiling light can darken the corners of the room, instantly narrowing the sense of space. Adding a floor lamp or table lamp creates two to three light points in the room, bringing back layers and depth. In terms of colour temperature, warm white light is more suitable for living spaces than cool white light.
3. Use Vertical Space, but Avoid Overcrowding
Wall shelves can help move clutter off the floor, but avoid covering an entire wall from top to bottom — leaving some wall space blank is essential for creating a sense of space. A common approach is to use just one wall for storage while keeping the others clean.
4. Storage Needs a "Fixed Position"
The quickest way for a small unit to become chaotic is when everything lacks a designated spot. Purchasing a complete set of storage boxes of the same style, with each box corresponding to a category of items, is far more effective than buying a mix of different storage tools, as the former eliminates the need to think about where to put things.
Changes Possible Even in Rental Properties
In situations where you cannot drill holes or paint walls, you can still make changes with: textiles (curtains, rugs, sofa covers), lighting fixtures, and mirrors. Mirrors are the most direct tool for small spaces — placing one opposite a window or main light source effectively duplicates the light and depth of the room.
