Whalefall had its global premiere on 14 October 2023 at the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. To match the film’s deep-sea theme, a stunning blue carpet was laid out at the premiere, along with a giant sperm whale head installation as a photo area, instantly transforming Hollywood Boulevard into a mysterious and breathtaking underwater world, attracting numerous media and fans to show their support.

Star-Studded Premiere

At the premiere, in addition to the two lead actors Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, who plays the mother of the main character, director and co-writer Brian Duffield, and the original novel’s author Daniel Kraus were also present to show their support. Renowned director Ron Howard made a special appearance, turning Austin into a starstruck fan, as he expressed that he has seen all of Ron Howard’s works.

Deeply Emotional Story, Brilliant Adaptation

During interviews on the blue carpet, Josh mentioned that the original novel is outstanding and that the film adaptation is equally impressive. He stated, “The editing, music, performances, direction, and script all come together, and after watching the film, I am very satisfied.” Austin agreed that the story’s premise is highly captivating, emphasising, “The idea of a person being swallowed by a whale is inherently terrifying, but what keeps viewers engaged is the emotional thread throughout the story.”

Whalefall tells the story of young protagonist Jay (played by Austin Abrams) who, after the death of his father (played by Josh Brolin), decides to dive off the central coast of California to search for his father’s remains, only to be unexpectedly swallowed by a massive sperm whale. Faced with the threat to his life, Jay gradually realises that his father’s teachings become the key to his survival. The tension-filled interactions between the two main characters and the emotional struggles in the depths of the ocean are undoubtedly the film’s biggest highlights. Whalefall will be released in Hong Kong on 15 October.
